Visions of crisp white snow, houses decorated with holiday cheer and colorful lights is a favorite time of year for the young and old. Christmas has a lot of meaning, but it’s most famed for the gift giving.

One favorite feature of Christmastime is the stocking! Hung from the fireplace, mantle or any other shelf, the magic and wonder of what Santa stuffed your stocking with brings about a lot of anticipation.

The Christmas stocking is the perfect handmade gift to give. You don’t have to stick with the classic red and white, you can choose colors and patterns that are favorites of the recipient. Customizing a Christmas stocking is easy and you can even include embellishments, embroider initials or a special phrase for added decor.

To make a handmade stocking is fairly simple, and, it will be the perfect heirloom.

What you need:

  • Felt or cotton fabric
  • Scissors
  • Sewing needle and thread

Instructions:

  1. Use an already made stocking as a guide for the pattern. Cut out the two pieces of fabric.
  2. Using thread of any color, sew the bottom and sides of the stocking together.
  3. If you are making the stocking of felt, use cotton and sew a thick piece around the top for name embroidering and vice versa if using cotton for the stocking.
  4. Now to complete the stocking, add personalized pieces like sequins, beads, phrases, dates and a name.
