Is a Poplin Suit Right for Me?

March 21st, 2017 Nick of Time Textiles

Are you in the market for a new suit? If so, you may want to consider a poplin suit, especially with warmer months on the horizon.

Even though you may have never heard of a poplin suit, the lighter fabric provides a great alternative to other commonly used suit fabrics during the spring and summer months.

What is poplin?

Dating back to the 15th Century and originally created from silk, today’s poplin fabric consists of a plain weave frequently made from cotton and polyester blends.

Cotton/polyester-blend poplin suits tend to stay more on the formal side of the spectrum due to the crispness of the fabric, while cotton poplin suits are seen as more informal as the fit is more relaxed.

Why choose poplin?

Poplin suits provide a wide variety of perks and advantages.

  • The lightweight fabric helps individuals stay cool during the spring and summer.
  • Poplin suits tend to be wrinkle resistant. However, if you are looking for an especially wrinkle-free fabric, go with a cotton and polyester blend.
  • Cotton-blend poplin suits tend to be more comfortable than traditional suits and allow for greater range of motion than more stiff fabrics that are more commonly used in suits.
  • Most poplin suits also tend to be machine washable

Poplin suits offer a lightweight alternative for businessman to work into their everyday look. The most common colors that poplin suits come in are olive, tan, navy and white. These colors allow for bold pairings. Poplin suits have become popular alternatives for weddings and business events.
