An Example of How Sewing Can Improve the Lives of Others

Sewing for Others

Sewing for Others Here’s a good story to tell you about– one that involves a 99-year-old woman who uses sewing to improve other people’s lives.

Her name is Martha Heft. Doesn’t that sound like the name of someone who sews? Back when she was 5-years-old, which would be in the 1920s, Martha saw her mom’s pedal sewing machine and wanted to use it. As she grew a little older, she took “home economics” in high school where the teacher essentially taught sewing, and Martha, having already taken to it, earned an easy “A” in the class.

Noting that sewing is a “joy, an accomplishment and a pleasure,” Martha has been busy over the past few years creating quilts and dresses. In fact, the grandmother of eight and great-grandma of 16, has completed some 670+ quilts that have been given away to help others as well as “little girl dresses” that have found their way to kids in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake and Puerto Rico after the 2017 hurricane-caused floods.

Interestingly, the 99-year-old takes old pillowcases that would have otherwise been thrown out (she gets them donated to her cause) and then transforms them into beautiful dresses for little girls to wear. Lest you think they look dopey because they’re made from pillowcases, you can rest assured they look as good and normal as any dresses you’d find on the racks at JC Penney or Wal-Mart.

To keep things interesting, Martha sews using different trims, pockets and collars, in all sorts of sizes and colors. Sometimes she’ll tack on an inspirational message to each piece, such as “Smile because we love you.”

Martha, who calls Clearwater, FL, home, has a sewing machine on her dining room table. She piles completed dresses on her living room sofa. She enlists the help of fellow church ladies to help sew more and more quilts and dresses, so they can spread the love both locally and all around the world.
