Faux Leather vs Genuine Leather Fabric

Faux Leather vs Genuine Leather Fabric

You’ve probably heard or seen the word “faux.” What does it mean? The dictionary definition says faux means “made in imitation; artificial.” When it comes to leather, you can get faux leather or genuine leather. What is “genuine?” The dictionary says genuine is “truly what something is said to be; authentic.” With regards to leather, what makes it genuine, then? If it comes from the process of tanning animal rawhides, then it’s genuine leather. By the way, most genuine leather comes from cattle hides. Some come from buffalo or oxen. Genuine leather has been used for various goods for centuries. In fact, early records of leather artifacts go all the way back to 2200 BC.

Faux Leather

If genuine leather is made from animal hides, what’s faux leather made from? Faux leather is a manmade combination of plastic, wax, dye and/or polyurethane. Because faux leather is manmade it can be mass produced, which typically makes it much cheaper than genuine leather. Furthermore, it looks “uniform,” whereas genuine leather typically does not– it may include pores, marks, and evidence of stretch marks, scars and veins, which give each piece a distinctive look.

For some people, faux leather is perfectly fine, while others want the look, feel and smell of long-lasting genuine leather. It’s a personal preference thing.

Now if you see the word “pleather” and wonder what it means, pleather can be described as a plastic fabric made to look like leather. It’s just adding a “p” onto leather… and it’s another term for faux leather.
