February 20th, 2017 nickoftime-admin

Denim fabric has been around for centuries. In fact, it was first discovered in the 1500’s in Genoa, Italy. When first discovered, it was used by the sailors in the navy. In 1873, Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss created the first ever pair of denim jeans: the rest is history.

Denim is now an extremely popular fabric worldwide and is probably one of the most well-known fabrics in history. Even today, denim is used in a variety of projects, from clothing to crafting.

You can sew denim but it can be difficult to do if you don’t perform the proper pre-sew preparations or if you do don’t have the right tools. Here are a few tips and tricks for sewing with denim:

Wash It First

If you are going to create with denim, you should pre-wash the fabric before you begin sewing. Washing the fabric will help to soften the fabric, making it easier to work with. Washing the denim first will also will also pre-shrink the denim.

Sharpen Your Scissors

Denim can be an extremely thick fabric. Before you start cutting, make sure that you have a very sharp pair of scissors to get through the fabric in order to cut out your pattern pieces.

Practice Makes Perfect

Creating with denim can be a hard skill to master. It is important to perfect your skills and practice sewing with denim. Before you start a project, do a few practice runs with a test stitch on a scrap piece.

Special Seams

Denim can get relatively bulky up so you may want to press your iron over the seams throughout the sewing process. Trimming the seams can also help reduce the bulk of the fabric.

Durability Matters

Before starting a denim project, check your needle and thread to make sure you have the strongest of both. Denim is a very durable material and will often break needles when they are not strong enough.
