Frayed Fabrics

Frayed Fabrics Is there anything worse than pulling something out of the washing machine and seeing that the fabric on it has been frayed? This can be especially frustrating for those who work with fabric on a regular basis. Many people enjoy sewing and using fabric for other purposes, and they like to prewash it to prevent the fabric from shrinking later. Nevertheless, often times, the fabric can fray when it’s washed and make the fabric unusable, so it’s important to take the proper steps to prevent this from happening.

Tips for Avoiding Frayed Fabrics

There are a couple of ways that you can keep fabric from fraying when you wash it. One of the easiest ways is to use a high-efficiency washing machine that doesn’t rely on the use of an agitator. An agitator can sometimes cause fraying to take place, so by cutting it out of the equation, you will reduce the risk of fraying.

But there is also another method that can use if you don’t have access to a high-efficiency washing machine. Before placing your fabric into your washing machine, you can clip a small triangular piece from the corners of the fabric you are washing. You only need to clip about half an inch from the fabric. This will cut way down on your fraying and stop clumps of loose strings from showing up in the wash when it’s done. It might not get rid of your fraying problem altogether, but you should notice a difference.

If you try both of these things and still have problems, you might want to consider washing new fabric by hand. The fabric that you buy shouldn’t be that dirty to begin with, so a quick hand wash will usually do the trick and stop fraying.
