How to Renew Your Old Furniture

If you’ve grown tired of your couch or loveseat, your first thought may be to throw it away and buy a new one. Instead, consider a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective approach-reupholstery.

If you have never reupholstered anything, you may be a little apprehensive to take on this project. Fear not- reupholstery is not as difficult as it sounds and with practice you will be able to transform your old couch in no time!

Here are simple instructions for reupholstering furniture for the very first time:

What you will need:How to Renew Your Old Furniture

  • Staple gun
  • Scissors
  • Needle-Nose Pliers
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • New Fabric
  • Batting

Begin Reupholstering:

First, you will need to decide what you are going to reupholster and then select a fabric to cover the old furniture. When selecting the fabric keep in mind how the fabric will lay on the furniture. If you are a beginner, it is best to stay away from patterns because it will be more difficult to match the edges together.

To determine how many yards of fabric you will need it is best to remove the old fabric first and measure it.

Most furniture is held together with heavy-duty staples, use the needle nose pliers to carefully remove the fabric from the furniture. Be careful not to rip the fabric because you will need to

use it as a pattern. Once you have all the fabric removed, lay it out flat and measure each piece. After you have the measurements you can determine how many yards of fabric you need.

After ordering your fabric from Nick of Time Textiles, lay out the fabric flat and cut out the pieces by laying the old fabric pieces on the new fabric. Before applying the new fabric vacuum out the furniture to remove any dirt they spray it with disinfectant spray to kill any germs.

If your furniture is old, you may need to replace the batting. To replace the batting remove it and cut new pieces by measuring it against your furniture. Staple the batting in place by using the staple gun. Remember to hold it taut as you staple to ensure that it does not bunch up.

Next, begin replacing the fabric. Start with the larger pieces like the seat fabric. Staple each piece of fabric by holding it taut and keeping the staples close together. After you finish the seat move on to the back by using the same process. Finally, hot glue the excess fabric to the furniture to secure the fabric.
