Sewists are likely to encounter both knit and woven fabrics as they select material for various sewing projects. It is helpful, and even important, to understand the differences between these two styles of fabric though. This is because each fabric is produced differently and has different characteristics that affect sewing and performance. These are some of the differences between knit and woven fabrics.

Knit fabrics

Knit FabricsKnit fabrics are, of course, produced by knitting. Garments that have been hand knit are relatively easy to identify. Commercially produced knit fabrics, on the other hand, can be difficult to distinguish from woven fabric. Despite the fact that knit fabrics are still knitted, the stitches are usually much smaller and difficult to distinguish.

While knit fabrics do offer certain advantages, they also present some challenges to sewists. The nice thing about knit fabrics is that they tend to be more breathable than woven fabrics. Unfortunately, knit fabrics are usually more challenging to work with because the fabric stretches easily and the edges are prone to curling.

A quick and easy way to identify knit fabrics if to gently pull on the edges of the fabric. A knit fabric will stretch in every direction.

Woven fabrics

Woven FabricWoven fabrics are produced by weaving together fibers on a loom. The result is a crossing pattern that is distinct from the loops seen in knit fabrics.

An advantage with woven fabrics is that they do not stretch too much and therefore are usually easier to sew. Woven fabrics will fray around the edges though, so it is necessary to finish the edges using a serger or zigzag stitch.

You can also identify woven fabrics by gently stretching the fabric. A woven fabric will usually only stretch slightly in a diagonal direction, but will not stretch side to side or top to bottom.
