Durable

Why do people like corduroy? It’s sturdy and reliable. As a cousin to velvet, corduroy is making a comeback. Most people think of it for kids’ clothes in the 1970s and 1980s, but it could just as easily be used to clothe royalty. And designers today are taking a fresh look at corduroy, bringing it back en vogue with adults. Savvy sewers should consider working with corduroy because it’s affordable, supple, and high quality these days. Generally all cotton (or a cotton/polyester blend), corduroy comes in a variety of sizes, prints/designs, and wales (from tiny to jumbo).

Creative Options

Using corduroy, you can create garments with interesting textures. Meanwhile, you’ll get a distinct visual appeal incorporating corduroy into the things you sew. Try combining it with other fabrics, such as silk or suede. Use it for certain parts of garments, like collars or cuffs. Experiment with using corduroy’s vertical lines and different-sized wales. If you’re thinking of making something that’ll fit close to the body and/or coats, corduroy works well!

Easy to Work With

As long as you remember the nap when cutting, you’ll find corduroy easy to sew and work with. A warm fabric that handles hard wearing, corduroy is available in different weights, so you can choose soft or heavy cords. Choosing “the right weight” for your pattern means you can make pretty much any garment using corduroy– it gathers and hangs well. Just remember that it has a nap (direction), so you need to allow extra length. Any pattern pieces you use should be straight of the grain and heading all in the same direction.

Can Help Keep Your Warm

In places where there are cold winters, corduroy is quite popular because it helps keep people warm. Therefore, if you’re thinking of making a coat for a friend or relative “up North,” try corduroy!
